Which Countries Really Won the Most Gold in the 2012 Olympics

Now that the Olympics are over, we can really get into the numbers and statistics.  Over at Research Access they explored the sheer amount of data that will be processed throughout the 2012 Olympics.

While we often count and track the number of medals countries win, this cool inforgraphic brings to light that it’s not just the number of medals won that determines the “winningest” countries, rather it’s the number of medals won as a function of the countries’ total population.  For example, countries with large populations have a larger number of athletes competing and a larger chance if winning a medal.

So, while the US and China both won the most medals, it was actually Grenada that won the most medals for the size of its population!
